Nigeria is gearing up to celebrate its 65th Independence Day on October 1, 2025, with a series of events planned across the country. The federal government has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to oversee the celebrations, which will include religious services, cultural exhibitions, and a presidential address .
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, emphasised the importance of unity and patriotism during the inauguration ceremony. He stated that the anniversary is not just a celebration of the past but a call to action for the future, urging Nigerians to recommit to nation-building .
The celebrations will kick off with a world press conference on September 25, followed by a Juma’at service and women’s activities on September 26. Youth events and a historical arts exhibition are scheduled for September 27, while a church service will hold on September 28. A public lecture is planned for September 29, with the celebrations culminating in a presidential broadcast and independence day parade on October 1 .
As part of the anniversary, the government will honour 250 Nigerians for their exceptional contributions to national development. The awards will recognise achievements in areas such as innovation, patriotism, and public service .
The government also unveiled the Nigeria @65 Compendium Project, a collaborative initiative with CherryAfrica Magazine. The project includes a state-of-the-art media hub for interviewing top government officials and documenting Nigeria’s developmental journey from the pre-colonial era to the present .
In addition to federal activities, states like Kano and Osun are organising their own events. Kano has inaugurated a diverse committee to plan parades, interfaith prayers, and community outreach programmes . Osun State is hosting an essay competition for students to reflect on Nigeria’s past, present, and future .
The Nigerian military also announced plans to establish a world-class Armed Forces Museum in Abuja. The museum, set to open in 2026, will preserve military history, honour fallen heroes, and serve as an educational and tourist attraction .
The 65th Independence Day celebrations aim to foster national pride and unity while reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since gaining sovereignty in 1960. The events will highlight the country’s resilience and aspirations for the future.
