The Defence Headquarters announced strong proactive steps to stop any attacks during the Christmas celebrations across Nigeria. Officials revealed the plans on Sunday, December 22, 2025. Additional troops moved to key locations and routes, while special forces and air support stayed on high alert for quick responses.
Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, explained the efforts. “Robust and proactive measures aimed at preventing any attacks during the Christmas festivities have been emplaced,” he said. Surveillance increased with aerial monitoring and intelligence to track suspected criminal groups.
Unit commanders received orders to boost patrols, set up strong checkpoints, and work closely with community leaders, vigilante groups, and state security teams. Citizens play a vital role, Onoja stressed, urging them to report suspicious activities quickly and confidentially while staying calm but alert.
In Rivers State, the police command rolled out its own enhanced plans under Commissioner Olugbenga Adepoju. Tactical teams deployed to entry and exit points, waterways, motor parks, hotels, recreational centres, churches, mosques, and other hotspots. Visible policing, better surveillance, and fast response teams aim to maintain law and order.
Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko highlighted cooperation with other agencies and community groups, including traditional rulers, youth organisations, and religious leaders. She encouraged residents to secure homes, watch children, and report issues to the nearest station.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, sent Christmas and New Year greetings through the announcement. As families prepare for joyful gatherings amid ongoing threats, these coordinated actions seek to deliver a safe and peaceful holiday season nationwide.
