The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it will meet today to decide its next steps after the one-month deadline it gave the Federal Government to resolve the crisis in public tertiary institutions ended on Friday.
NLC’s acting Secretary-General, Benson Upah, said the Congress remains committed to ensuring stability in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Student leaders under NANS also urged the government to prevent another shutdown of campuses. NANS’ Assistant Secretary-General, Adejuwon Olatunji-Emmanuel, called for “urgent and lasting action,” noting that students have enjoyed rare academic stability since President Bola Tinubu assumed office.
ASUU had suspended its two-week warning strike in October and gave the government one month to meet its demands, including updating the 2009 agreement, clearing unpaid salaries and allowances, and releasing revitalisation funds. The grace period ended yesterday.
The union has warned it may resume strike if it sees no concrete progress, although the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, insists the government has already addressed the key issues.
