The National Universities Commission has announced plans to strengthen Nigeria’s university system through a new curriculum framework and updated guidelines that will allow more collaboration with foreign universities.

The Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, disclosed this during the 10th convocation ceremony of Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State. He said the reforms are aimed at making Nigerian universities more relevant, competitive and better aligned with today’s job market.

According to Ribadu, the new curriculum places strong emphasis on practical and employable skills, while giving universities room to adjust part of their programmes to suit their individual goals and strengths.

He also said the NUC has reviewed its rules to make it easier for foreign universities to operate in Nigeria or partner with local institutions. This, he explained, will give students access to international education without leaving the country and help improve skills development.

Speaking at the event, the founder of the university, Greg Ibe, urged graduating students to use the knowledge and digital skills they have acquired to tackle Nigeria’s challenges. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Cele Njoku, said the university remains committed to equipping students with practical skills needed to succeed in a changing global environment.
