The political tension in the Lagos State House of Assembly took a new turn on Thursday as Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted Speaker, declared that he has resumed his position as the head of the parliament.
Obasa made this announcement after returning to the assembly complex with police and State Security Service officers for the first time since his removal on January 13.
“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa stated.
His return came shortly after the security aides of Speaker Mojisola Meranda were withdrawn, adding more uncertainty to the ongoing leadership battle.
Obasa was removed from office after lawmakers accused him of poor leadership, lateness, abuse of office, intimidation, and disregard for colleagues and the governor. His exit led to the election of Mojisola Meranda as Speaker, sparking division within the House.
To resolve the crisis, top APC leaders, including former governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, held meetings with political stakeholders on President Bola Tinubu’s directive.
Reports indicate that both Obasa and Meranda may step down, as party leaders are now considering a new Speaker from Lagos West.
