Security forces in Nigeria’s capital have used tear gas to break up a group of campaigners calling for the freedom of Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned head of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra group, following an earlier clash that sent people fleeing.
The latest confrontation happened in the Utako neighbourhood on Monday, where the activists had come together again after scattering from a previous run-in with officers near the Transcorp Hilton hotel in Maitama. That first encounter left shoppers, drivers, and passers-by scrambling for cover amid the chaos.
Made up of human rights supporters and members of groups pushing for fair governance, the crowd waved placards and sang songs of unity to highlight their cause. They belong to a wider movement known as #ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow, which seeks to convince the central government to follow a 2022 ruling from the appeal court that cleared Kanu of all charges.
Once the protesters regrouped, heavily armed personnel swooped in once more and unleashed tear gas to force them apart. The move quickly cleared the area, leaving behind a tense atmosphere.
In response, extra guards have been placed at key spots across the Federal Capital Territory, including Eagle Square, the main government offices, and the Three Arms Zone. Troops, along with police and agents from the State Security Service, now stand watch at these locations. Near the Berger traffic circle, a large squad of soldiers has set up with an armoured vehicle ready for any trouble.
