Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched two major programmes to improve the wellbeing of girls and children across the country.
In Lagos, she kicked off the “Flow with Confidence” initiative, which provides over 370,000 sanitary pads to schoolgirls, especially those in rural areas. The project, worth more than ₦2.5 billion, seeks to help girls manage their menstrual health with dignity and confidence, ensuring they don’t miss school during their periods.
The programme was hosted in Lagos by the governor’s wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and received praise from the Chairman of Epe Local Government, Princess Surah Animashaun, who described Mrs. Tinubu as “a true mother of the nation whose compassion continues to inspire women and children.”
In a related effort, the First Lady also launched a national vaccination campaign against measles and rubella in Abuja. The drive intends to protect about 106 million children aged nine months to under 15 years, making it one of Africa’s biggest health campaigns.
Mrs. Tinubu urged parents to get their children vaccinated, saying, “A vaccine in a vial does not save a child. Protection only becomes real when it is injected into the arm of a child.”
The Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Pate, commended her efforts, calling the campaign “a historic step toward a healthier Nigeria.”
Traditional and religious leaders, including the Ooni of Ife and the Sultan of Sokoto, also pledged their support, stressing that awareness and education will help families accept the vaccines.
