Russia has expressed concern after U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at possible military action in Nigeria over alleged attacks on Christians.
Moscow’s Foreign Ministry said it was “closely watching” the situation and urged all sides to respect international law.
Trump, in a recent post, claimed thousands of Christians were being killed by Islamist groups and vowed to “protect them globally.”
Nigeria dismissed the claim. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin described Trump’s remarks as “un-American” and “a violation of international law,” while northern leaders accused Washington of interference.
Cleric Enoch Adeboye urged President Bola Tinubu to crush terrorism within three months, warning that no foreign power would defend Nigeria if war breaks out.
In the U.S., Congressman Riley Moore supported Trump, tabling a resolution accusing Nigeria of Christian persecution and alleging over 7,000 deaths this year.
Analysts in Nigeria, however, say Trump’s stance is politically and economically driven, not religious.
