A security expert has urged the Federal Government to empower licensed private security firms following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to withdraw police officers from VIP protection.
The Managing Director of Proton Security Services, Adekunmi Odebunmi, described the move as a chance to strengthen Nigeria’s security system.
“This policy is a turning point and an opportunity to properly empower private security firms,” he said.
He noted that private security operatives can help protect homes, offices and VIPs where security pressure is increasing, especially as public agencies are overstretched.
Odebunmi also called for a strictly regulated system that would allow trained private security personnel to carry arms for defensive purposes only.
“With proper regulation, this will improve protection and support national security,” he added.
