Senate Begins Nationwide Hearings to Amend 1999 Constitution

The Senate has launched public consultations on proposed amendments to the 1999 Constitution.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who chairs the Constitution Review Committee, confirmed that zonal hearings will hold simultaneously across the six geopolitical zones from July 4 to 5. Venues include Lagos, Kano, Maiduguri, Jos, Enugu, and Ikot Ekpene.

The initiative is part of a broader national dialogue aimed at addressing critical governance issues, including security, fiscal reforms, gender equity, and political inclusion.

Speaking ahead of the hearings, Senator Jibrin urged Nigerians to actively participate in what he described as a defining moment for the country’s democracy.

“This process isn’t just about laws. It’s about listening to the people and shaping a future that reflects our collective values,” he said.

Among the key issues up for debate are the structure of local governance, election reforms, state policing, and demands for new states. Also being considered are proposals that could expand political representation and adjust the balance of power across various levels of government.

The committee noted that feedback gathered during the hearings would shape the final set of constitutional amendment bills to be presented before the National Assembly.

Senator Jibrin emphasised that the goal is to ensure the constitution evolves in line with the aspirations of all Nigerians both home and abroad.

“Every voice matters. This is an opportunity for citizens to influence the legal framework that governs their lives,” he added.
