Senate Confirms CBN Board Member, NCoS Controller-General

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Prof. Melvin D. Ayogu as a member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Board of Directors and Sylvester Nwakuche as the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

Ayogu, an Economics professor at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and an indigene of Enugu State, was nominated by President Bola Tinubu in line with the CBN Act, 2007. His confirmation followed a review by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, chaired by Tokunbo Abiru, with a report presented by Senator Osita Izunaso.

Nwakuche’s appointment was approved after deliberations by the Senate Committee on Interior, led by Adams Oshiomhole. His confirmation comes in the wake of a recent jailbreak at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State, where 12 inmates escaped, with four recaptured.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged Nwakuche to prioritise prison security, stating, “To whom much is given, much is expected.”

Nwakuche, who was initially appointed in an acting capacity on December 13, 2024, replaces Haliru Nababa as the new Controller-General of the NCoS.
