SERAP Challenges Politicians’ Salary Increase in Court

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit to stop plans by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to raise the pay of political leaders.

The case, lodged at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeks to block salary adjustments for the President, vice president, governors, and lawmakers.

SERAP argued that the proposal ignores Nigeria’s harsh economic reality. “The imminent pay rise for political and public office holders is a gross violation of the Constitution,” the group said, warning that such increases favour politicians at the expense of ordinary citizens.

The organisation asked the court to order a cut in salaries and allowances instead, saying this would “better reflect current economic realities and serve the public interest.”
