The city of Ibadan witnessed a convergence of high-profile dignitaries on Friday as Oba Rashidi Ladoja was formally installed as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The historic ceremony at Mapo Hall drew national figures including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, and former state governors Rabiu Kwankwaso, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Kayode Fayemi, and Donald Duke .
The day’s proceedings commenced with the performance of traditional rites at the Labosinde Compound in Oja’ba. Chief Waheed Popoola, the Afobaje of Ibadanland, placed the symbolic Akoko leaves upon Oba Ladoja’s head before a grand procession escorted the monarch to Mapo Hall for the principal coronation event . The new Olubadan was accompanied by political allies, including Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun and former gubernatorial candidate Teslim Folarin .
President Bola Tinubu arrived in Ibadan to attend the installation, underscoring the national significance of the occasion . His presence, alongside that of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, was anticipated for the official presentation of the staff of office to the new monarch . Other political leaders in attendance included federal and state lawmakers .
Oba Ladoja’s ascension to the throne follows the passing of his predecessor, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, on July 7 . The coronation marks the culmination of an eight-day series of events celebrating Ibadan’s cultural heritage and the new monarch’s installation .
