Sultanate Council Sets August 23 for Rabi’ul Awwal Moon Sighting

Muslims in Nigeria have been asked to search for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal on Saturday, August 23, 2025, according to a directive from the Sultanate Council in Sokoto.

The call was issued by Prof. Sambo Junaidu, Wazirin Sokoto and head of the Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs.

He explained that any confirmed sighting should be reported to local traditional leaders, who will forward the information to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

The sighting marks the start of Rabi’ul Awwal, the Islamic calendar’s third month, observed by Muslims worldwide as the birth month of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Praying for divine support, Prof. Junaidu said: “May Allah (SWT) help us in this duty.”
