Senator Abdurahman Sumaila has cautioned state governors to stop obstructing efforts to grant full autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local government councils, warning that continued interference could trigger legal and political consequences.
Speaking in Kano at the North-West Zonal Public Hearing of the Constitution Review Committee, the Kano South lawmaker accused governors of “reducing local councils to beggars by withholding their allocations.”
He commended President Bola Tinubu for backing his sponsored bill on local government autonomy and pursuing a Supreme Court judgment to protect council independence.
“We cannot allow state actors to keep the third tier of government under their control. This must stop,” Sumaila declared, urging the National Assembly and civil society groups to resist further attempts to weaken the councils.
