The 9th edition of the National Youth Games has opened in Asaba, Delta State, bringing together thousands of young athletes from across Nigeria.
Declaring the Games open at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, President Bola Tinubu, represented by his aide Sunday Dare, described the competition as a breeding ground for future stars.
He assured that his administration would continue to support sports, which he called a strong force for national unity.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by Speaker Emomotimi Guwor, said the state remains committed to grassroots development, citing investments in facilities and its history of producing champions like Stephen Keshi and Ese Brume.
“We believe in catching them young and giving our youth the stage to shine,” he said.
Organisers emphasised that the Games are designed to connect grassroots participation with elite performance. Over 6,000 athletes are competing in 37 sporting events this year.
