President Bola Tinubu has called on West African leaders to stand together against rising threats to democracy, citing the recent coup attempt in Benin Republic and renewed instability in Guinea-Bissau.
Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the 68th ECOWAS Heads of State and Government meeting in Abuja on Sunday, Tinubu warned that the region is most vulnerable when internal divisions weaken collective resolve. He stressed that security challenges, unconstitutional power grabs and economic pressures require a united regional response, not isolation.
His remarks came amid arrests in Benin following the failed coup attempt, including that of Chabi Yayi, son of former president Thomas Yayi, with authorities yet to disclose the charges. Several opposition figures have also been detained, while an international arrest warrant has been issued for activist Kemi Seba.
Tinubu said Nigeria believes dialogue and solidarity, rather than force, should guide ECOWAS through its current challenges, adding that no single country can achieve lasting stability alone.
ECOWAS Chair and Sierra Leonean President Julius Bio condemned the resurgence of unconstitutional actions in the region, warning that instability in one country threatens all. He praised the swift deployment of regional troops, led by Nigeria, to help restore calm in Benin.
