The Presidency has defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to grant cash prizes, national honours, and housing to Nigeria’s Super Falcons after their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations victory.
Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, reacting to criticism of the gesture, argued that the rewards were well-deserved compared to payouts from private ventures such as reality television.
“When you remember that Multichoice, organiser of BBNaija, is offering the winner ₦150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons,” Onanuga said on X, adding that the President celebrated “excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry, and the undying Nigerian spirit.”
Onanuga’s comparison to BBNaija drew mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians applauding the recognition of the team’s achievement and others questioning the use of foreign currency for the payments.
