Two people lost their lives in distinct traffic collisions in Lagos State on Saturday, prompting quick action from emergency teams and a push for stricter vehicle checks.
In the first mishap, a speeding lorry on the Osborne Expressway veered out of control after its brakes suddenly failed, striking a passer-by and causing instant death near the traffic lights at Simpson Street towards Ikoyi.
Rescue workers arrived promptly to cordon off the area and ease the flow of vehicles. The lorry driver, who had swerved to dodge cars ahead, now faces questioning after officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority detained him and passed him to police at Dolphin Estate and Ikoyi stations. The victim’s body was moved to a mortuary in Ebute Metta until relatives could identify it.
The traffic agency’s head offered sympathies to the bereaved family, stressing the urgent need for drivers of heavy vehicles to carry out regular servicing. He praised the responders for their fast work and reminded motorists to follow road guidelines to avoid such tragedies.
Hours later, another collision unfolded on the LASU-Igando route, where a packed passenger bus slammed into a broken-down waste collection vehicle parked on the Obadore bridge without any hazard markers or lights to warn approaching drivers.
Emergency responders reached the spot just after 11:30 p.m. and found the bus’s driver, a grown man, dead at the scene, while fellow travellers suffered cuts and bruises. The waste lorry bore the plate KSF 254 XV, and the bus LND 602 YE. The bus owner, a worker from Lagos State University, got a ride home in the school’s ambulance. Responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency pulled the wrecked bus to Obadore police station for checks.
The agency’s top official explained that the lack of alerts on the faulty vehicle led to the deadly smash, and teams worked to treat the injured and clear the road.
These crashes echo a similar one last December near Iyana Ishashi, where a lorry with faulty brakes crushed a walker to death during a sharp turn, underlining the repeated dangers from poor upkeep on busy Lagos streets.
