Heading to Africa? U.S. Government Urges Caution for Travel to Nigeria and 15 Other Nations

​For Americans dreaming of an African adventure, the U.S. government has a word of warning. The Department of State recently updated its travel advisories, and Nigeria, along with 15 other African countries, has been flagged as a high-risk destination. This means that U.S. citizens are being officially advised to either completely avoid traveling to these places or to seriously think again before booking their trip.
​So, how does the U.S. government decide which countries are safe and which are not? They use a simple four-level system. Level 1 is the safest, where you’re just told to “exercise normal precautions.” On the other end of the spectrum is Level 4, which comes with a very clear message: “do not travel.”
​The countries that have been flagged, including Nigeria, fall into the more serious categories of Level 3 and Level 4. This indicates that the U.S. government believes there are “life-threatening dangers” for travelers in these locations.
​The decision to put a country on this high-risk list isn’t made lightly. It’s based on a wide range of information gathered from various U.S. agencies, including the FBI, CIA, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They look at many factors, such as the risk of crime, the threat of terrorism, political instability, and even health concerns or the possibility of natural disasters. They also consider whether the local government would be able to help an American citizen in an emergency.
​For 2025, Nigeria is a new name on this list of high-risk countries. Other new additions include Burundi, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, and Uganda. Meanwhile, some countries like Sudan, Mali, and Ethiopia have been on the list since 2023 because of ongoing conflicts and the activities of extremist groups in those regions.
​While the main goal of these travel advisories is to keep American citizens safe when they are abroad, they also give us a glimpse into how the U.S. government views the stability and security of different parts of the world. For now, the message to American travelers is clear: if you’re planning a trip to Nigeria or one of the other 15 flagged African nations, be sure to do your research and proceed with extreme caution.
