A United States congressman called for intensified efforts to tackle Nigeria’s security woes during talks with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja. Riley Moore highlighted ongoing terrorism in the North-East and killings in the Middle Belt as major worries for President Donald Trump. He stressed that concrete steps discussed in the meeting could boost safety for all Nigerians if carried out fully.
Moore praised the Nigerian government and President Bola Tinubu for rescuing 100 abducted Catholic schoolchildren from a school in Niger State. He viewed the operation as a sign of growing commitment to the national security emergency declared by Tinubu. The lawmaker noted a new joint task force between Nigeria and the US as proof of fruitful teamwork.
Ribadu hosted the US congressional team on Sunday for fact-finding discussions on shared priorities. Ambassador Richard Mills joined the session, which covered counter-terrorism and regional stability. Ribadu expressed hope that the talks would build trust and strengthen the two nations’ security partnership.
The visit followed Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern over religious freedom issues, including threats of military action. Nigerian officials rejected claims of targeted persecution against Christians, insisting that violence strikes people of all faiths. On November 20, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth met Ribadu at the Pentagon to plan joint strategies against the threats.
