The World Bank has announced Mathew Verghis as its new Country Director for Nigeria, starting July 1, 2025. He replaces Dr. Ndiame Diop, who has transitioned to another position within the institution.

Verghis, an Indian national, brings more than two decades of global development experience to the role. He joined the World Bank in 1999 and has served in key leadership positions across Africa, East Asia, Europe, and Central Asia. Until recently, he was Regional Director for Economic Policy and Growth in South Asia.

In his new role, Verghis will oversee the Bank’s operations in Nigeria, including its support for economic reforms, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure development. He will also coordinate partnerships with government agencies, civil society groups, and international donors.

Speaking on his appointment, Verghis described Nigeria as a country with “real potential for transformative growth,” adding that he looks forward to working with local stakeholders to create jobs and expand opportunity.
