Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, from September 22 to 28, 2025. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and confirmed by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President).

Shettima will represent President Bola Tinubu at the high-level event, which commemorates the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. His itinerary includes participation in the General Debate from September 23 to 28 and the delivery of Nigeria’s national statement on September 24 between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. New York time. The statement will outline Nigeria’s stance on global peace, regional security, climate action, and economic development.

Key side events on the Vice President’s agenda include a special Climate Ambition Summit hosted by the UN Secretary-General, where Nigeria is expected to announce its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Shettima will also attend a high-level roundtable on Adequate and Affordable Housing hosted by the President of Kenya and engage in bilateral meetings focused on regional and global cooperation.

Nigeria’s participation will emphasize multilateralism and address pressing issues such as terrorism, drug trafficking, climate change, and digital transformation. The delegation, which includes Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar and other senior officials, will also participate in events co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia on the Palestinian question and a symposium on African digital trade policies.

Following the UNGA, Shettima will travel to Frankfurt, Germany, for meetings with officials of Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria. This year’s UNGA theme, “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to global solidarity and sustainable development.
