A former aide to Godwin Emefiele, ex-CBN Governor, on Monday admitted in court that he had no physical or digital proof to back his claim of delivering $400,000 to his former boss.
Testifying before a Lagos Special Offences Court, John Adetola revealed that he acted on a WhatsApp message received in 2018 instructing him to collect the money from a former CBN director and pass it to Emefiele in Lagos.
However, Adetola said he kept no receipts, messages, or call records of the transaction, explaining, “I didn’t think it was necessary.”
The statement came as part of an ongoing trial where Emefiele and a second defendant, Henry Omoile, are facing corruption charges involving billions of naira and dollars.
During questioning, Adetola confirmed he was not under arrest or offered any deal for his testimony. He also acknowledged that he never directly discussed the money with Emefiele.
The case continues as the court adjourned for further hearing.
