A 13-year-old boy from Lagos has taken the top spot in a nationwide writing challenge run by a major bank’s charity arm. Seth Egodi, a year eight pupil at Graceland International School in Port Harcourt, earned the win for his sharp take on how young people can help cut down waste and make the world greener.
The contest, aimed at kids aged nine to 16, drew entries from all over Nigeria. It asked writers to share ideas on tackling rubbish and building a cleaner planet. Seth’s piece stood out for its fresh thoughts and clear steps anyone can follow.
He received a cash award of N1.5 million, plus a tablet and a full set of books. The runners-up, two girls from the same age group, got N1 million each, along with tablets and reading packs. All 20 finalists grabbed school bags stuffed with supplies.
Seth’s school head praised his talent and thanked the family for backing his love of words. The boy said he felt shocked but thrilled, and plans to keep writing about real-world fixes.
The bank’s charity boss hailed the event as a way to spark young minds on green living. She noted that over 1,000 kids joined in, showing how the next group cares about a healthier earth. The group will now roll out workshops in schools to spread tips on waste cuts, using ideas from the top entries.
