Healthcare services are set to resume in FCT-owned hospitals as the Association of Resident Doctors has officially ended its strike.
The decision follows significant interventions by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Dr George Ebong, the association’s president, revealed on Friday that the strike, initiated over unpaid salaries and other grievances, was called off after the Federal Capital Territory Administration fulfilled several key demands.
He revealed that the six months’ salary arrears owed to members have been paid, and Minister Wike approved other crucial measures, including approval of the payment of accoutrement allowances and authorised measures to address the shortage of medical personnel.
Dr Ebong stated that these interventions have resolved the immediate concerns, and all resident doctors are expected to return to work on Saturday, 25 January 2025.
He emphasised the importance of sustaining these efforts to prevent future disruptions and urged the minister to address other pending issues, such as hazard allowances and infrastructure upgrade.
“We remain optimistic about Minister Wike’s ability to make FCT healthcare a model for excellence,” Dr Ebong stated, highlighting the doctors’ commitment to supporting ongoing reforms.
