MTN Nigeria has begun rolling out a 50% increase in data tariffs, following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval in January. While call and SMS rates remain unchanged, the revised pricing structure has notably affected data plans.
A senior MTN executive, speaking anonymously, confirmed the development: “Yes, we’ve started updating our price lists. However, this process is gradual, and we haven’t completed it for all products yet.”
A review of the new pricing structure shows significant adjustments. The 1.5GB plan, previously N1,000, has been replaced with a 1.8GB plan at N1,500. The 15GB plan has increased from N4,500 to N6,500, while the 20GB package now costs N7,500, up from N5,500.
Larger bundles have seen even steeper hikes, with the 1.5TB plan jumping from N150,000 to N240,000 and the 600GB plan rising from N75,000 to N120,000.
The NCC justified the hike, citing rising operational costs and the need for industry sustainability.
According to the Commission’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, the decision aligns with its regulatory mandate under the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
However, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has condemned the increase and is considering legal action.
The group is advocating for a reversal to a 10% adjustment instead of the approved 50%.
