President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday officially opened the renovated Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, in a ceremony attended by top government officials.
The event came as the Senate announced plans to introduce a bill that would make a presidential address on June 12 a permanent tradition, to honour Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the proposal aims to recognise June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history. He added that the bill may also recommend that future presidential inaugurations be held at the National Assembly complex.
Meanwhile, the Senate is also considering an extension for the implementation of the 2024 budget, especially for capital projects. On constitutional reforms, Bamidele noted that the review process is nearing completion, with public hearings expected soon.
June 12 marks the anniversary of the annulled 1993 election believed to have been won by M.K.O. Abiola. In 2018, it was officially declared Democracy Day by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Earlier this year, former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida publicly acknowledged that Abiola won the election, an admission that added more meaning to the day.
