The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has sent a strong message to DJs across the country: if you’re spinning tracks at parties, clubs, or public spaces without the proper license, you’re breaking the law, and could end up behind bars.
The Copyright Act gives music creators full rights over how their work is used, and violating those rights can lead to a fine or even jail time.
The only body authorised to issue such licences is the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN). DJs are expected to obtain permission and pay royalties through this organisation before using copyrighted music in their sets.
The NCC also acknowledged that the Deejays Association of Nigeria (DJAN) has already entered a working agreement with MCSN to help members meet this legal requirement.
In a clear statement, the Commission made it known that enforcement will follow. Anyone found sidestepping these rules should be prepared to face prosecution.
