Nigeria is in mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a hospital in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
President Bola Tinubu has ordered that all flags across the country fly at half-mast for the next seven days. He also called an emergency meeting of top government officials (the Federal Executive Council) for Tuesday, July 15, to honour the late leader.
In an emotional tribute, Tinubu described Buhari as a true patriot who served Nigeria with all his heart, first as a military leader in the 1980s and later as a civilian president from 2015 to 2023.
“President Buhari stood strong through tough times. He led with quiet strength and never lost hope in Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
He praised Buhari’s fight against corruption and his efforts to bring discipline into public service, saying he always put the country above his own interests.
Tinubu also sent his condolences to Buhari’s wife, Aisha, their children, and the entire family. He extended his sympathy to the people of Daura in Katsina State, Buhari’s hometown.
Finally, Tinubu assured Nigerians that Buhari would be honoured with a full state funeral, and he prayed for his soul to rest in peace.
