Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday in Brasília, calling for stronger cultural ties between Nigeria and Brazil. The meeting took place during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil.
Soyinka’s visit was private but aligned with ongoing efforts by both governments and the private sector to deepen relations between Africa’s largest black nation and South America’s largest economy. During the meeting, the literary icon presented his translated book, “Mito, Literatura e o Mundo Africano” (Myth, Literature, and the African World), to President da Silva.
The Nobel laureate emphasised cultural diplomacy as a vital tool for fostering mutual understanding and building global partnerships between the two countries. He highlighted the importance of cultural exchange in strengthening the historical bonds between Nigeria and Brazil.
Following his meeting with the Brazilian president, Soyinka participated in cultural renaissance events hosted by Brazilian communities, further promoting Afro-Brazilian cultural exchange. These events aimed to celebrate the shared heritage between the two nations and explore opportunities for collaboration in arts and literature.
The cultural diplomacy initiative comes as both Nigeria and Brazil seek to expand their relationship beyond traditional economic and political cooperation. The shared African heritage in Brazil, with its large population of African descent, provides a natural foundation for cultural partnerships.
Soyinka’s engagement with Brazilian cultural communities represents part of broader efforts to use soft power and cultural connections to strengthen diplomatic ties between the two countries.
