Olusegun Awolowo, grandson of Nigeria’s late nationalist leader Obafemi Awolowo, died at age 62. The family announced his passing on Thursday. A distinguished lawyer and public servant, he overcame early hardships after losing his father just two months before birth.
Awolowo studied law and joined the Bar in December 1989. He worked at law firms including Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and GOK Ajayi & Co. He later advised on traditional institutions and legal matters under President Olusegun Obasanjo, holding key roles in trade and transport across administrations.
From 2013 to 2021, he served as Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, the longest tenure in its history. In July 2021, member states elected him President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations for ECOWAS.
President Bola Tinubu mourned the loss as tragic for the Awolowo family and Nigeria. He praised Awolowo’s embodiment of his grandfather’s values in truth and justice. Tinubu offered sympathies to his wife, children, mother Sisi Abah Folawiyo, and the people of Ogun State and the South-West.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun called him a gentleman of courage and impact. He remembered Awolowo’s intelligence and warmth, noting his brief life left deep marks. Abiodun consoled his family and all Nigerians touched by his service.
The family hailed him as an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather—steady, wise, and loving. He anchored their home while serving Nigeria with integrity and passion. They expressed shattered hearts yet deep gratitude for his enduring legacy.
