Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, will officially step down as Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc on June 16, 2025, marking the end of his two-decade leadership of the company.
The announcement, made in a statement by company secretary Temitope Hassan, revealed that the decision aligns with corporate governance best practices and long-term succession planning.
Dangote has led the sugar company since 2005, transforming it into one of Nigeria’s top sugar producers. His tenure saw the implementation of major development projects, including sugar production initiatives across Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States, aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on imported sugar.
As part of a planned leadership transition, the board has named Arnold Ekpe, an Independent Non-Executive Director, as the incoming chairman. Ekpe, who will take over on the same date.
“Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Arnold Ekpe, Independent Non-Executive Director as the new Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc. effective 16th June 2025,” the statement added.
