Officers in Anambra State have rounded up seven men posing as toll gatherers who were shaking down drivers and traders on busy roads. The group, armed with fake badges and notepads, targeted spots like the Enugu-Onitsha expressway and Awka roads, pulling in cash from folks who thought they were official.
The arrests happened on Wednesday after tips from locals fed up with the scams. Police said the men had no ties to any real agency and used threats to grab money for “road use fees” or “safety checks.” One of them, a 32-year-old from Enugu, led the pack and pocketed most of the takings.
The top cop in the area praised those who spoke up and warned that fake collectors often hide bigger crimes. The suspects now face charges for fraud and causing public fear, with court dates set soon. Officials urged drivers to check for proper IDs and report dodgy stops to keep roads safe and fair.
