Prof. Chris Piwuna has emerged as the new president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), taking the helm at a time of rising unease within Nigeria’s academic community.
Elected during the union’s National Delegates Congress held in Benin, Piwuna, a psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, replaces outgoing president Prof. Victor Osodeke.
He emerged winner over Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
His leadership begins as federal universities face renewed unrest over the sharing formula for recently disbursed Earned Academic Allowances and worsening brain drain due to poor working conditions.
Piwuna’s emergence signals a potential shift in ASUU’s strategy as members await clearer direction on pending grievances with the Federal Government.
