A Lagos High Court has stopped the Surulere Local Government from carrying out any activities on a piece of land owned by the Deeper Life Bible Church, following the demolition of the church’s building in Lawanson.
In a ruling on Thursday, Justice E.O. Ashade ordered that the church should regain full access to the land and continue its religious activities without disturbance. The court also instructed the police to provide security for church members to prevent further clashes.
The church had earlier complained that despite ongoing talks and a court order, its property was pulled down and new structures were being built on the site.
According to its representatives, the church had operated on the land since 2007 and was surprised by the sudden action from the local authorities. A compensation offer of ₦10 million was reportedly rejected by the church, which described it as insufficient.
Efforts by the police and Christian leaders to mediate between both sides had stalled, leading to the court’s intervention.
The court warned all parties to obey the order and allowed room for further dialogue if peace could be reached.
