Former senator Shehu Sani has advised ex-President Goodluck Jonathan to steer clear of the 2027 presidential race, arguing that Nigeria’s political environment has shifted and no longer favours his return.

Sani, who spoke during a televised interview, said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform that brought Jonathan to power in 2011, has lost its strength and internal unity.

According to him, factions within the party have either aligned with the current government or thrown their weight behind a newly formed opposition coalition.

He noted that while Jonathan retains the right to contest, the circumstances around the PDP make another presidential run impractical.

Sani also questioned the credibility of the emerging opposition alliance led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He described it as lacking in ideology, stressing that its leaders are not offering Nigerians a genuine alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“In a democracy, opposition is vital,” Sani said. “But when a coalition merely focuses on power for its own sake, without presenting a different model of governance, it loses purpose.”
