Resident doctors in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory have commenced an indefinite strike, citing unpaid salaries and deteriorating working conditions as the primary reasons for their industrial action.
The decision was announced by the Association of Resident Doctors, FCTA chapter, following a breakdown in negotiations with health authorities. Doctors employed since 2023 report owed salaries ranging from one to six months, creating severe financial hardship for medical personnel.
The strike action comes after a seven-day warning strike failed to yield meaningful commitment from authorities to address the doctors’ grievances. Key demands include immediate payment of outstanding salaries, recruitment of additional medical staff, and urgent renovation of healthcare facilities described as inadequate for proper patient care.
Healthcare services across the territory’s hospitals are expected to be significantly disrupted by the industrial action, affecting patient care and routine medical services throughout the capital region.
