The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned officers of the Nigeria Police Force against the illegal and prolonged detention of suspects, stressing that such actions violate constitutional rights and erode public trust.
In a statement on Sunday, Force spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi highlighted the IG’s directive for strict compliance with Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantee human dignity and personal liberty. Egbetokun warned that any officer found guilty of detaining suspects beyond the legally permitted period would face severe disciplinary action.
The IGP reiterated the importance of professionalism and accountability within the Force, urging officers to respect human rights while maintaining law and order. He assured Nigerians that the police leadership remains committed to upholding justice and ensuring that detainees are treated lawfully.
