LP Faction Tells Obi to Quit Party Over New Political Alliance

A faction of the Labour Party led by Julius Abure has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urging him to resign his membership after his recent alliance with a newly formed opposition coalition.

Obi was unveiled as part of a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is gearing up to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 elections. His involvement has triggered disapproval from Labour Party leadership, who accuse him of maintaining dual political loyalty.

Speaking in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, claimed Obi had been engaging some LP members behind closed doors to join him in the coalition.

“We are aware of several nocturnal meetings between Peter Obi and some of our members, lobbying them to join him in his new party,” Ifoh stated. “A number of them have refused to defect with him.”

The LP faction emphasised it was not part of the new alliance, warning that members associating with the coalition must step aside from the party.

“Any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party,” Ifoh declared.

He also criticised he credibility of the opposition alliance, describing it as a platform of “recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians,” and dismissed the popular “new Nigeria” slogan associated with Obi as misleading.

While Peter Obi has yet to publicly respond to the ultimatum, his association with other high-profile politicians in the coalition, including Atiku Abubakar and Rauf Aregbesola, signals a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027
