In a bid to enhance the capabilities of Nigerian youth and strengthen their participation in the global economy, the federal government has introduced the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA). The initiative, launched in Abuja on Monday, is designed to equip young Nigerians with essential skills in digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and technical expertise.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu at the launch, highlighted the nation’s young demographic, with a median age of 17, as a key motivation for the initiative. He noted that Nigeria’s projected population growth underscores the urgency of equipping the next generation with tools to thrive in a competitive world.

NiYA’s programmes will focus on three core areas skills, including acquisition, economic empowerment, and leadership development. It will provide financial and mentorship support for aspiring entrepreneurs, alongside technical training to ensure Nigerian youth remain competitive in the digital economy.

Youth Development Minister Ayodele Olawande emphasised that the academy would bridge the skills gap in the job market, ensuring young Nigerians have the expertise needed to secure employment or establish their own businesses. Finance Minister Wale Edun also commended the initiative, stressing the importance of practical skills over academic certificates in today’s evolving job landscape.

At the launch, selected young beneficiaries from various regions received start-up grants to support their entrepreneurial ambitions. The government expects the academy to play a pivotal role in reshaping Nigeria’s workforce, driving economic growth, and preparing the youth for emerging global opportunities.
