A Nigerian education advocate, Mr Seyi Anifowose, has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records for convening the largest gathering of teachers in history. The feat was achieved at the “Let There Be Teachers Conference 2025,” which took place on September 20 at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.
The record confirmation was announced via a Zoom call on September 23 by a representative of the global records body. The event, powered by the organisation 1 Million Teachers, successfully mobilised an unprecedented number of educators from across Nigeria to highlight the critical importance of the teaching profession.
Mr Anifowose described the achievement as a victory for education and for Nigeria, emphasising that it proves teachers matter. He noted the symbolic importance of hosting the conference at Tafawa Balewa Square, the same ground where Nigeria declared its independence in 1960, marking another proud national moment dedicated to nation-builders in the classroom. He also praised the resilience of the teachers who attended, many of whom endured challenging weather conditions and long verification lines to make the record possible.
With the record now secured, the convener indicated that the next phase of the initiative will focus on policy advocacy. Plans are underway to engage the National Assembly on reforms aimed at improving the country’s education system and enhancing the welfare of teachers.
