Members of the Osun State royal families have petitioned the state governor to implement regulations governing monarchs’ use of social media platforms. The appeal follows a public dispute between the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, and the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.
The conflict originated from comments made by the Oluwo regarding the historical significance of various towns in the region. These remarks prompted a strong rebuttal from the Ataoja’s palace, leading to a heated exchange played out across social media channels.
In their petition, the princes expressed concern that such public disagreements between traditional rulers damage the institution’s dignity. They specifically urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to intervene and establish guidelines for how monarchs conduct themselves online.
The royal descendants emphasized that while traditional rulers should embrace modern communication tools, their usage must align with the respected traditions of the monarchy. They proposed creating a code of conduct that would prevent future public conflicts between royal figures.
Governor Adeleke’s office has acknowledged receipt of the petition and indicated that the matter will receive appropriate consideration. The state government has previously mediated between traditional rulers to maintain harmony within the royal establishment.
