President Bola Tinubu visited Benue State on Wednesday following recent violent attacks that left dozens dead and many others injured in rural communities.
Arriving in Makurdi, the state capital, just before 1 p.m., Tinubu was welcomed by top officials including the state governor, Hyacinth Alia, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Other dignitaries included North-Central governors, ministers, and lawmakers.
As part of his visit, the President stopped at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital to meet victims who were injured in last Friday’s attack on the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area. The assault, reportedly carried out by armed herders, claimed over 59 lives and displaced several residents.
To mark the President’s visit and give room for public participation, the Benue State Government declared Wednesday a public holiday.
After visiting the survivors, Tinubu proceeded to a closed-door meeting with political leaders, security officials, and community representatives at the Government House banquet hall. The discussion focused on long-term strategies to stop the cycle of violence affecting many parts of the state.
Tinubu is also expected to engage with families of victims and displaced persons as part of efforts to promote peace and recovery in the region.
