Lagos Government Defends Oworonshoki Demolition Despite Resident Protests

The Lagos State Government has defended its recent demolition of buildings in the Oworonshoki area, stating that residents ignored multiple warnings and amnesty opportunities to regularise their structures. The action has sparked protests and drawn criticism from rights groups.

According to the government, the demolition targeted unapproved and distressed buildings that posed safety hazards, blocked drainage channels, and created security risks. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Gbolahan Oki, emphasised that the state followed due process, serving demolition notices and engaging in community sensitisation through traditional leaders.

The government had introduced a multi-phase amnesty programme from May to December 2024, allowing property owners to obtain planning permits. However, only two or three residents complied, while others ignored the opportunity. During the amnesty period, 18,489 applications were submitted, and 8,856 planning permits were issued.

The demolition led to significant unrest, with residents blocking the Third Mainland Bridge in protest. Demonstrators, including women and children, demanded compensation and resettlement, accusing the government of carrying out the exercise without adequate notice or alternatives. The protest caused severe traffic gridlock, though police intervention eventually restored calm.

Rights groups, including the Take-It-Back Movement, condemned the demolition, describing it as “state-sponsored terrorism against the poor”. They alleged that the exercise displaced thousands of families and destroyed livelihoods, calling for immediate compensation and resettlement.

In response to the outcry, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reportedly directed a pause in the demolition for dialogue. The government has also streamlined the process for obtaining planning permits, reducing the timeline to 10–15 days and decentralising it to local government offices.

The situation remains tense, with both sides standing firm. The government insists the demolition was necessary for urban development and safety, while residents and activists demand justice and humane treatment.
