The French media conglomerate Canal+ has officially completed its takeover of MultiChoice Group, the owner of popular satellite services DStv and GOtv. The deal, which was finalised on Monday, creates one of the largest pay-television and streaming groups on the African continent.

The combined entity now boasts a significant presence in nearly 70 countries across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It brings together a subscriber base of more than 40 million people and a workforce of approximately 17,000 employees. This merger is seen as a strategic move to consolidate resources and compete more effectively in the rapidly evolving global media landscape. The transaction values MultiChoice at around 35 billion rand.

Following the completion of the deal, leadership changes have taken effect. Calvo Mawela, the former Chief Executive of MultiChoice, has stepped down from his role. He is succeeded by David Mignot, a Canal+ executive with extensive experience in African markets. Mawela is expected to transition to the position of Chairman for the combined group’s African operations. The new management has announced it will conduct a full review of the business, including the Showmax streaming platform, with a detailed strategy expected to be unveiled in early 2026.

The acquisition received the necessary regulatory approval from South African authorities in July 2025, concluding a process that began with an initial offer from Canal+ the previous year. The merged company has committed to maintaining investments in local content production and supporting small businesses in South Africa.
