The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to making eye care an integral part of its broader plan to improve healthcare access across the country.

Speaking in Umuahia at the 48th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, emphasised the administration’s sector-wide approach to healthcare, which includes prioritising vision care.

Represented by the Managing Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Prof. Azubuike Onyebuchi, the Minister noted, “Eye care is part of the Federal Government’s sector-wide approach for quality healthcare for Nigerians. The goal is to ensure that everyone, regardless of location, has access to essential health services, including vision care.”

The NOA conference, themed “Optometry in a Changing World: Adapting to Emerging Trends”, brought together key voices in the eye care sector to explore how Nigerian optometrists can respond to technological shifts and changing patient needs.

In his opening remarks, NOA President Dr. Anderson Chimeziri stressed the need for the profession to lead change, not just react to it.

“We find ourselves in an era of rapid technological progress and shifting global health dynamics. As primary eye care providers, we must not only keep pace; we must take the lead,” he said.

Adding to the conversation, CEO of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN), Dr. Obinna Awiaka, called for practitioners to embrace innovation while upholding professional standards.

He identified key focus areas such as digital transformation in eye care, continuous professional development, workforce expansion, and integration with public health systems..

Governor Alex Otti, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, aligned with the theme of inclusive healthcare.

“We are focused on making life better for everyone, not just for the rich or the strong, but for all,” he said.
