The Federal Government has suspended the implementation of a disputed circular reviewing allowances for medical and dental officers in public service.
The decision followed intense pushback from key medical bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), who described the June 27 directive as unfair and unilaterally imposed.
Speaking on Monday, the President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr. Tope Osundara, confirmed the suspension of the policy following a high-level meeting chaired by the Minister of Finance.
“The circular has been suspended to allow for further consultations with relevant professional bodies,” Osundara said.
According to Osundara, the government agreed to halt the circular’s implementation pending further talks with health sector stakeholders.
The move comes just days before the NMA’s July 23 ultimatum deadline, which threatened a nationwide strike if the circular wasn’t withdrawn.
