A dispute has erupted within the family of Nigerian music icon, King Sunny Ade, as one of his daughters, Damilola Esther, accused her stepbrother, Dayo, of restricting access to their father and mismanaging his affairs, sparking concerns over the juju legend’s wellbeing.
In a series of social media posts, Damilola alleged that Dayo, who she described as acting manager, was isolating their father, failing to fulfill event bookings, and diverting funds. She also claimed that King Sunny Ade had expressed a desire to return home but was being prevented from doing so.
“Where is my dad? Why is he unreachable? He told my brother he wants to go home. Why hasn’t he been online or answering calls?” she wrote, calling for Dayo’s arrest and alleging he intended to flee the country.
However, Dayo has dismissed the allegations, stating in an interview that their father is “very much alive, active, and well.” He confirmed that King Sunny Ade recently performed at a private 60th birthday event in Victoria Island, Lagos, and is scheduled for another show in Akure on May 1, 2025.
He clarified that he is not officially the musician’s manager but has only been assisting temporarily at King Sunny Ade’s request.
“I’m not on any payroll. I’m simply helping my father out until a new manager is appointed,” Dayo explained.
Dayo also disclosed that Damilola had spoken with their father on Easter Sunday for about 30 minutes and suggested she visit Nigeria if she had further concerns.
Supporting Dayo’s account, another son, David, confirmed that their father is not under any form of duress and remains in control of his performances and decisions. “He just finished an event. I have proof he is fine and active,” he said.
Despite these reassurances, veteran journalist Olawale Olaleye expressed concern, revealing that former associates of King Sunny Ade had recently been unable to reach him, fueling suspicions. According to Olaleye, even he failed to make contact despite multiple attempts to book the musician for a show.
The situation has triggered public debate, as fans await a promised statement from King Sunny Ade to address the controversy and affirm his current condition.
