Nigeria’s advertising watchdog has begun a formal inquiry into 9mobile over allegations that the telecom operator owes advertising agencies over ₦1 billion in unpaid fees.

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) said it received multiple complaints suggesting the telecom firm defaulted on payments for past campaigns while continuing to work with new marketing agencies.

Although details of the complainants remain confidential, ARCON disclosed that it is looking into whether proper exit procedures were followed and if the company violated any industry guidelines in switching agencies.

The regulator expressed concern over how such financial disputes affect not only agencies but also media vendors and support services, warning that payment delays can disrupt operations across the advertising value chain.

ARCON also stated it would collaborate with relevant enforcement bodies to ensure the matter is resolved and any outstanding debts are settled. The council reaffirmed its position on a 45-day payment policy and emphasised stricter enforcement of industry standards going forward.

Efforts to reach 9mobile for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
